It’s not easy to score a century in the ODI format, forget about scoring a double century. Very few players in the history of cricket have scored a double century in the ODI format. It is very difficult to stay on the crease for so long and make your century convert into a double. One must be consistent and dedicated to making runs to achieve this milestone. Sachin Tendulkar was the first batsman in cricket history who smashed double centuries in the ODI format. There are only ten players in the world who have been able to score double centuries in ODIs in cricket history. Amongst them, Rohit Sharma is the only batsman who has achieved this milestone of double century three times in his career.

1. Rohit Sharma- 264 (India)
This double century of 264 scored by Rohit Sharma is the highest score in ODIs in cricket history. Rohit made this double century against Sri Lanka on 13 Nov 2014 at Eden Gardens. India won the toss and they decided to bat first in the 4th ODI series against Sri Lanka. India started very well but they lost their one opener wicket Ajinkya Rahane at 7.5 overs. Rohit was batting aggressively from the other end and continued doing so. He reached a century and then didn’t stop and smashed a double century of 264 scores in 173 deliveries with 33 fours, 9 sixes, and a strike rate of 152.60. This score is also the highest in cricket history with a record for most runs from fours and sixes. After that, only Virat Kohli managed to score 66 runs whereas other batsmen were out with scoring few runs. Rohit played till the last ball, unfortunately, he lost his wicket on the last ball of the first innings. Yet India put up the huge target of 404 runs and eventually, Sri Lanka lost the match with 153 runs.
2. Martin Guptill- 237* ( New Zealand)
The second-highest double century of 237 runs not out was scored by Martin Guptill against West Indies in the 4th Quarter-Final of the ICC World Cup on 21 March 2015 at Wellington. This score is still the highest in the history of the ICC World Cup. Plus Martin is the only player from New Zealand to achieve this feat of double century in ODI in cricket history. New Zealand won the toss and they chose to bat first. They lost their first wicket at just 4.2 overs. However, Martin was at the crease and he smashed an unbeaten 237 runs off 163 balls with 24 fours, 11 sixes and a strike rate of 145.39. NZ recorded 393 runs on board to West Indies to chase and they fell short of 143 runs and lost the match.
3. Virender Sehwag- 219 (India)
Virender Sehwag became the second Indian batsman and the second cricketer in the world to score a double century in cricket history. It came against the West Indies on 8 December 2011 at Indore. This double century was also very special as India put up their first highest target of 418 runs. India won the toss and they chose to bat first. Gautam Gambhir scored 67 runs, Suresh Raina scored 55, and Virender smashed 219 to help India achieve the target of 418 runs. Sehwag smashed 25 fours, and 7 sixes with a strike rate of 146.97 off 149 balls to get his double century. At last, India won the match by 153 runs.
4. Chris Gyale- 215 (West Indies)
Chris Gayle is the only player from West Indies to score a double century of 215 runs against Zimbabwe in the 2015 ICC World Cup 15th match at Canberra. West Indies won the toss and they elected to bat first. They lost their first wicket within 2nd ball, but after that, Chris Gayle and Marlon Samuels took charge and smashed a total of 384 runs. Marlon Samuels was unbeaten with 133 runs whereas Chris Gayle got out at the last ball of the 50th over. Gayle hit 215 runs double century with 10 fours and 16 sixes with a strike rate of 146.25. Gayle was also the second-highest batsman in the world to hit 16 sixes in a single innings. The target for Zimbabwe was 372 runs and they were restricted by West Indies bowlers on 289 runs. Hence, WI won the match with 73 runs(D/L method)
5. Fakhar Zaman-210* (Pakistan)
Fakhar Zaman is the only Pakistani batsman to make it into this list of players who scored 200 in an ODI. He is the first and only Pakistani batsman to achieve this remarkable feat of a double century of 210* runs in his ODI career. This came against Zimbabwe on 20 July 2018 at Bulawayo. Pakistan won the toss and they chose to bat first. They batted very well in the start with both their openers Imam and Fakhar scoring centuries. Imam was out making 113 runs but Fakhar was on the crease till the end. He smashed his first double century of 210 runs with 24 fours and 5 sixes with a strike rate of 134.61. This Innihgs by Fakhar is also the fourth highest in the world for the record of most fours(24) in an inning. Later Asif Ali scored a half-century and Pakistan was able to put a target of 399 runs on the board. The target was huge and Zimbabwe couldn’t chase. Hence, they lost the match to Pakistan by 244 runs.
6. Pathum Nissanka-210* (Sri Lanka)
Pathum Nissanka is the only Sri Lankan player to make it into this list of players who scored 200 in an ODI. He is the first and only Sri Lankan batsman to achieve this remarkable feat of a double century of 210* runs in his ODI career. This score of Nissanka is the fifth-highest run in an inning in the world. Afghanistan won the toss and they chose to field first. Sri Lanka started with a bang and both their openers smashed the Afghanistan bowlers. Pathum Nissanka was not out till the end. He smashed 210 runs with 20 fours and 8 sixes with a strike rate of 151.07. Sri Lanka made 381 runs. Afghanistan fought hard to chase but they couldn’t win. They lost the match by 42 runs.
7. Ishan Kishan-210 (India)
Ishan Kishan is the fifth Indian batsman to make it into this list of players who scored 200 in an ODI. He scored 210 runs against Bangladesh on 10 December 2022 at Chattogram. Bnagaladed won the toss and they chose to field first. Ishan was opening in this match with former Indian opener Shikar Dhawan. Dhawan lost his wicket very early with 8 runs under his name. Ishan was batting very aggressively from the other side and he completed his century. Virat Kohli also scored a century of 113 runs. Ishan made his century into a double century with 24 fours, 10 sixes and a strike rate of 160.30. India made 409 runs target with Ishans 200, Virats 113 run. Bangladesh couldn’t chase this huge target and they lost the match with 227 runs.
8. Rohit Sharma- 209 (India)
This double century of 209 runs was the first scored by Rohit Sharma in ODI. He became the third Indian batsman in the world to hit a double century. Rohit made this double century against Australia on 2 Nov 2013 at Bengaluru. Australia won the toss and they decided to field first. India started very well with both openers scoring runs. Rohit was batting aggressively from one end and from another end Shikar Dhawan was smashing runs. Dhawan got out but Rohit continued and he reached a century. Later he converted it into a double century of 209 scores in 158 deliveries with 12 fours, 16 sixes and a strike rate of 132.27. After that, only Ms Dhoni managed to score 62 runs whereas other batsmen were out with scoring a few runs. Rohit played till the last over but got out at 49.3 overs. Yet India put up the target of 383 runs and eventually, Australia lost the match with 57 runs.
9. Rohit Sharma- 208* (India)
This was the third double century of 208* runs scored by Rohit Sharma. He is the only batsman in the world who has a record of three double hundred in ODI history. Rohit made this double century against Sri Lanka on 13 December 2017 at Mohali. Sri Lanka won the toss and they decided to field first. India started very well with both openers scoring runs. Rohit was batting aggressively from one end and from another end Shikar Dhawan was smashing runs. Dhawan got out but Rohit continued. He was unbeaten with a double century of 208 runs with 13 fours, and 12 sixes with a strike rate of 135.94. Later Shreyas Iyer scored 88 runs. India put up a huge target of 392 runs and eventually, Sri Lanka lost the match with 141 runs.
10. Shubmam Gill-208 (India)
Shubman Gill became the fifth Indian batsman to achieve the amazing milestone of a double century. He smashed 208 runs against New Zealand on 18 January 2023 at Hyderabad. In the match, India won the toss and chose to bat first. Rohit sharma and Shubman Gill started the match as openers. They started very well and scored 54 runs in the powerplay. However, Rohit got out at 12.1 overs and the pressure was on Shubman Gill. After Rohit, India kept losing early wickets to their batsmen. Only Shubman Gill could sustain till the last over and he got caught at 49.2 overs. What mattered here is he scored his first double century with 19 fours, 9 sixes with a strike rate of 139.59 off 149 balls. India made the target of 349 runs and won the match by 12 runs despite New Zealand player Michael Bracewell’s 140 runs well-fought score.
11. Glenn Maxwell- 201* (Australia)
The unbeaten double century of 201* runs by Glenn Maxwell is one of the greatest knocks in ODI history. This came in the chase against Afghanistan in the 39th match of ICC World Cup 2023 at Wankhede, Mumbai. Also, Glenn is the first player from Australia to hit a double century in ODI. The toss was won by Afghanistan and they chose to bat first. They played well and set a target of 291 runs in which Ibrahim Zadran smashed the first-ever century by any Afghanistan player in an ODI. Australia started very poorly in the chase and lost their 4 wickets in just 8.2 overs with 49 runs on the board. It was looking impossible for Australia to win this chase game. However, Glenn Maxwell started hitting and he scored 201 runs to chase the target of 291 runs. He hit 201* runs with 21 fours and 10 sixes with a strike rate of 157.03 off 128 balls. Eventually, he turned the impossible scenario of the chase into a possible one and made his team win the match.
12. Sachin Tendulkar – 200* (India)
This is the first-ever double-century in the history of ODI cricket. This feat was achieved by none other than Sachin Tendulkar. It came against South Africa on 24 February 2010 at Gwalior. India won the toss and they elected to bat first. The opening pair of that era Virender Sehwag and Sachin Tendulkar started the first innings in good form until Virender Sehwag was out at 3.5 overs. Then DK came to bat and supported Sachin very well with his fine innings of 79 score. Yusuf Pathan made 36 rund and out. At last, MS Dhoni and Sachin were on the crease and finished the first innings with 69 and 200* runs respectively. Sachin smashed his double century with 25 fours and 3 sixes with a strike rate of 136.05 off 147 balls. India made 401 runs and South Africa were short of 153 runs to win the match.
